No lights? No problem!

The lights going out is a normal and expected daily occurrence on this island.  If the lights don't go off multiple times a day, it's a good day.  Today, in parasitology lab, we watched a video about some crazy critter than infects dogs and then watched our professor show the scotch tape method of pulling parasites off a dog with a stuffed animal.  The second we were supposed to start the actual lab and turn the microscopes on, the lights went off.  We all waited a few seconds for the generators to kick in, as they normally would.  But not today.  The lights flickered a few times and tried it's hardest to come back but to no avail.  You would think the professors would send us home because we can't do the lab, but no.  We wound up doing most of the lab in the dark without the microscope and used flashlights, ipods, iphones, and the digicels (our island phones) with the flashlights built in to see some of the slides (which surprisingly worked okay.  the ipod touch flashlight app works well with microscopes if anyone happens to be in this situation...).  Absolutely ridiculous.  I bet they don't have to deal with these issues at vet schools in the US...
